Range FC proved to be the stars of the show in our Wednesday men’s league, outlasting Team 1 in the final to take home the Wednesday league crown.
The teams had played out a 4-4 tie in the final game of the regular season to seal their playoff places, so a tight, competitive final was expected. Luckily Team 1’s play is always more imaginative than their team name and they contributed to a great first half in a game that looked like it could remain locked in a stalemate. Although Range had the upper-hand with a 2-1 lead, Team 1 pulled it back to 2-2 and penalties very much looked on the cards. Both teams passed up opportunities to win it before Range banged home the clinching goal with only a little time left on the clock. It was too late for Team 1 to respond and Range FC had taken the title with a deserved 3-2 victory.
Division 2 also matched up the top two from the regular season. In the last meeting between the teams, TR3YWAY FC had dug themselves out of a huge hole, coming from 3-0 down against Gabroo FC to claim a deserved 3-3 tie. They fell behind again in the final, trailing 2-1 at half time and 3-2 with only minutes remaining. Amazingly though, they once again managed to salvage an identical 3-3 tie to send the game into penalty kicks.
As always penalties are a tense affair, but Gabroo FC finally managed to shake off a dogged opponent and claimed the Division 2 crown with victory in the shoot out.
The summer season of the Wednesday men’s league begins on Wednesday July 25th and there are still 2 team spaces and a handful of individual spots available on a first come, first served basis at the Footy Sevens website.
